The Urban Cores of our Midwestern cities used to be the center of all activity, commerce, housing, and recreation. As suburbs expanded, downtown became more exclusively the place to go to work. Slowly evolving over the past couple decades then, more rapidly over the last 4 years - this is no longer the case. The offices have seen less people return, which has a ripple effect of reducing real estate values, reducing tax revenue, and reducing vibrancy. The option of simply waiting for office space to refill is risky and not realistic. So, what do we do with these spaces that used to be so central to the function of downtown? Adaptive Reuse is an answer, but it is not a straightforward one. Tomorrow, Amanda Markovic and Elizabeth Schmidt, will explore the challenges all cities are facing, look at specific challenges facing adaptive reuse from an architect's lens, and propose methods for an approach to ensure the sustainable and prosperous future for our cities. @cnu_newurbanism #cincinnati #cities #adaptivereuse

Congratulations to @feinknopf for this incredible photo - a top ten selection by @apalmanac for non-residential, large project photo of the year! A simple box with a single fold, the mass of Digital Futures 2 (left) shifts at the third floor to share the sun with it's neighbor, Digital Futures 1 (right). An image as inspiring as the innovative work the Digital Futures complex was designed to host. #architecture #design #photography #archphotography #archphoto #architecturalphotography @terrexllc @uofcincy @kierantimberlake

“Whatever you’re doing, the space you’re doing it in can make your task easier or harder,” notes Angela, who recently served as a keynote panelist at the International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care. “Architects are dot connectors,” she says. “We make the connections between the things an organization wants to accomplish, and the way space can make those goals easier to achieve. Whether it’s operational efficiency, user experience, or equity goals, the design can provide resources that amplify those goals.
